This Week’s Meeting

Hi Scouts!
This meeting we’ll be doing OA Elections, Camporee Meal Planning, and the BEE MOVIE!
Please come at 7 so we can have time to fit everything in. We’re only watching part of the movie this meeting (we’ll continue on the 15th), but we have a lot to do regardless. 
You can bring snacks! Please make sure they aren’t messy because we are using the Church’s space, which means we need to keep it clean.

*Scoutmaster’s Note — in order to hold the OA election we need as much of the troop present as possible. Please make every effort to attend the meeting this week.

Scout Challenge

Every three years the Atlanta Area Council puts a council-wide event that brings together all of the Scouts in the Atlanta Area Council in a mini Jamboree. Those that were with the troop in 2019 will remember this as a highlight of the early days of the troop, and those that weren’t are in for a treat. This campout replaces what would normally be the District Camporee, but it should be a lot of fun with an opportunity to connect with the more than 2,500 Scouts in Atlanta. Scouts Got Talent

Are you Atlanta’s most talented vocalist? Maybe your dance moves are out of this world or maybe your comedy routine is on point. Showcase your talents at Scout Challenge’s “Scouts Got Talent” competition!

All Scout Challenge participants are welcome to try out and the top 3 finalists will go head-to-head on stage at the Scout Challenge arena show on Saturday night, competing for the title of Scout Challenge’s Most Talented Scout!

This can be an individual or a group entry (up to 8 members).

If you are interested in competing please see Mr. Taylor for an entry form.

Sewing at Scouts

Mrs. Todd will be sewing at the meetings coming up on March 8 and March 15. If you have patches that need to be sewn on your uniform, please bring your uniform and/or sash to the meeting in a zip-lock bag with the patches and your name on the outside of the bag. Also, be sure your name is on the uniform pieces. If you have the name patch sewn on your uniform already, that should be sufficient. For Merit Badge sashes, please make sure your sash is labeled.

In most cases where a Scout needs one or two new patches, the work should be completed the same night. If you have several patches like swapping out a new uniform shirt or earning a dozen merit badges, then these may be taken home by Mrs. Todd to complete there.

Scouts who have turned in their uniforms to have their patches updated may wear a Class B t-shirt to our meeting while their shirt is being worked on.

Hank Aaron Role Model Award

The Hank Aaron Role Model Award is given to an outstanding student-athlete involved in Scouting in the Atlanta Area Council who exemplifies good character and athletic achievement. Any Scouts BSA member or Venturer may be nominated for the award by taking just a couple of minutes to complete this simple application! Nominations are due by February 18th.

Scout Day at the Capitol

March 9, 2022 | Georgia State Capitol

Scouting prepares young people to be good citizens. Spend the day witnessing first-hand the political process in Georgia. Take on the Capitol Scavenger Hunt. Watch your legislators recognize your Scouts from the House Gallery. And have a chance to ask actual representatives your most pressing questions! 

The Capitol will provide a note explaining the activities the Scouts participated in during the day. This event starts at 7:45 AM. Please check with your school’s administrative staff to determine if this will qualify as an excused absence.

Shooting Sports Days

Upcoming Atlanta BSA Events:

Open Shoot – Archery, Rifle, or Shotgun
Date: April 2 from 9AM-4PM
Location: Woodruff Scout Camp – 31 Woodruff Dr, Blairsville, GA 30152
Cost: $10 per session

Summer Camp

We are still a couple of months off from summer camp registration, but some of the High Adventure programs fill up early. If you will be 13 by June 1st, 2022 and would like to participate in one of the High Adventure Treks offered through Camp Daniel Boone, instead of the traditional summer camp program, please read through the High Adventure Guide to find out what programs are offered and what is involved in each program, then register through the troop Summer Camp Registration Form.

National Youth Leadership Training

NYLT is a week-long advanced leadership course designed to teach Scouts the tools, techniques and skills they need to be better leaders – not only in their units, but also at home, in school, and in their daily lives. The Atlanta Area Council offers this several times throughout the year. This is a great opportunity to hone your leadership skills (and it looks great on a college resume). Introduction to Leadership Skill for Troops is a prerequisite for NYLT. This is a one day course taught at the troop level, and we will be scheduling this for the spring. If you are interested in attending please visit the Atlanta Area Council NYLT page or talk to Mr. Taylor or Mr. Wheeler about what’s involved.

If you have already attended NYLT, you can also serve on staff for one of the upcoming NYLT weeks. See the above website for details.

There are opportunities for community service listed on the Community Service Page. If you know of any other opportunities, please feel free to share these with Autumn or Mr. Taylor.

Merit Badge Opportunities

Atlanta Area Council has announced all of the Merit Badge summits for 2022. The next Merit Badge Summit will be April 30th and will feature STEM Merit Badges. Registration opens on March 18, 2022 at 9 AM.

Atlanta Area Council offers many merit badge offerings throughout the year. Upcoming Merit Badge opportunities include Aviation offered March 12, April 16, and May 14.

Chattahoochee Nature Center offers nature themed merit badge classes on the weekends in the Spring through Fall. Upcoming classes include Nature Merit Badge on April 24, Canoeing on May 1, Environmental Science on May 15, and Mammal Study on May 22.

Dunwoody Nature Center also offers a number of nature related Merit Badges. Upcoming classes include: Nature on April 9, Soil & Water Conservation on May 28, and Sustainability on June 25.

Daniel Boone Council headquartered in Asheville, NC has a rolling slate of virtual merit badge programs, with new merit badges offered every week. These are usually two sessions in the late afternoon or evening. There are quite a few popular merit badges including a large selection of Eagle Required. These usually fill up, but if you look at later weeks, there are plenty of seats still open.
